Generic Azithromycin

Common use

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria by interfering with their protein synthesis. Azithromycin is often prescribed for conditions like bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, and chlamydia. It does not work against viral infections like the common cold or flu.

Dosage and direction

Azithromycin is typically taken once daily by mouth, with or without food. It may be prescribed as a single large dose or as a short course over several days, depending on the infection. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. It's essential to complete the full course even if symptoms improve early to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Precautions

Before using azithromycin, inform your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney problems, myasthenia gravis, or heart rhythm disorders. Use with caution if you are taking other medications that affect heart rhythm. Prolonged use or repeated courses may lead to secondary infections, including fungal overgrowth. Tell your doctor if symptoms persist or worsen after a few days of treatment.

Contraindications

Azithromycin should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or other macrolide antibiotics. It is contraindicated in patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use. It should be used with caution in individuals with QT prolongation or uncorrected electrolyte imbalances. Always follow your doctor’s advice before starting treatment.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Some individuals may also experience headache, dizziness, or skin rash. Rare but serious effects can include liver dysfunction, allergic reactions, or changes in heart rhythm. Seek medical attention immediately if you notice symptoms like jaundice, severe fatigue, or chest palpitations.

Drug interaction

Azithromycin may interact with medications such as antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, blood thinners like warfarin, and drugs that affect heart rhythm, including some antiarrhythmics. Taking it with other QT-prolonging medications may increase the risk of arrhythmias. Always provide your healthcare provider with a complete list of your current medications. Some drug levels may require monitoring during use.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for the next one. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose. Try to take the medication at the same time every day for best results. Skipping doses may reduce effectiveness and promote resistance.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and temporary hearing loss. In severe cases, hospitalization may be required for supportive care. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical help immediately. Do not exceed the prescribed dose under any circumstances.

Storage

Store azithromycin at room temperature away from moisture and direct heat. Keep it in its original container, out of reach of children and pets. Do not use expired medication. Consult your pharmacist for proper disposal of unused tablets.
