Generic Betamethasone

Common Use
Betamethasone is a corticosteroid medication used to reduce inflammation, swelling, redness, and allergic reactions in various conditions. It is prescribed for skin disorders, arthritis, asthma, allergic conditions, and autoimmune diseases. It can be used topically, orally, or via injection depending on the condition.

Dosage and Direction
Dosage and form depend on the condition being treated and are determined by a healthcare provider. For topical use, apply a thin layer to the affected area once or twice daily. Oral or injectable forms should be taken exactly as prescribed and never stopped abruptly.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have a history of diabetes, hypertension, infections, osteoporosis, or liver disease. Long-term use can suppress the immune system and lead to hormonal imbalance. Avoid contact with people who have contagious diseases like chickenpox or measles.

Contraindications
Betamethasone is contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections or hypersensitivity to corticosteroids. It should not be used in untreated skin infections or in areas with open wounds unless directed by a doctor. Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be closely monitored.

Possible Side Effects
Side effects may include increased appetite, weight gain, mood swings, sleep problems, or skin thinning (with topical use). Long-term or high-dose use can lead to adrenal suppression, Cushing's syndrome, or weakened bones. Report any serious effects such as vision problems or severe swelling immediately.

Drug Interaction
Betamethasone may interact with medications such as warfarin, insulin, diuretics, and live vaccines. Enzyme inducers like phenytoin and rifampin can reduce its effectiveness. Always tell your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.

Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Overdose
Chronic overdose can lead to symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome, electrolyte imbalance, or adrenal suppression. Acute overdose is rare but should be treated symptomatically. Seek medical help immediately if overdose is suspected.

Storage
Store betamethasone at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not freeze topical forms. Keep all medications out of reach of children and do not use after the expiration date.
