Biltricide

Common use
Biltricide is an antiparasitic medication used to treat infections caused by various types of parasitic worms, particularly schistosomiasis and other fluke infections. The active ingredient, Praziquantel, works by paralyzing the worms, allowing the body's immune system to eliminate them.

Dosage and direction
Biltricide is usually taken in a single dose or a series of doses depending on the type of infection. The exact dosage is based on the patient's weight and the specific parasitic infection being treated. It is typically taken with food to reduce stomach upset. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully to ensure the correct dosage and schedule.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have a history of liver problems, as Biltricide may need to be adjusted for patients with impaired liver function. This medication may cause drowsiness or dizziness, so avoid operating heavy machinery or driving until you know how it affects you.

Contraindications
Biltricide is contraindicated in individuals who are allergic to Praziquantel or any of the components of the medication. It should not be used in pregnant women, especially during the first trimester, unless absolutely necessary. It should also be avoided by individuals with severe liver disease unless advised by a healthcare provider.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include headache, dizziness, nausea, abdominal discomfort, or fever. Some individuals may experience muscle pain, itching, or skin rash. Rare, but serious, side effects may include allergic reactions or liver toxicity.

Drug interaction
Biltricide can interact with other medications, particularly those that affect the liver or have sedative properties. Medications like rifampin, cimetidine, or anti-epileptic drugs may alter the effectiveness of Praziquantel. Always inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one—do not take two doses to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose
An overdose of Biltricide may cause severe drowsiness, confusion, or gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea and vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.

Storage
Store Biltricide at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication in its original packaging and out of reach of children.
