Generic Budesonide Formoterol Inhaler

Common use

Budesonide formoterol is a combination inhaler used to manage asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Budesonide is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the airways, while Formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator that helps relax airway muscles, making breathing easier. Together, they improve lung function and reduce the frequency of asthma attacks and COPD flare-ups. This medication is intended for long-term maintenance, not for emergency relief.

Dosage and direction

The dosage depends on the severity of the condition and the patient's response to treatment. It is usually inhaled twice daily (morning and evening), with the number of inhalations determined by your doctor. Shake the inhaler well before use, inhale the dose deeply through the mouth, and rinse your mouth afterward to prevent oral thrush. Use consistently every day for best results—even if you feel well.

Precautions

Before using this inhaler, inform your doctor if you have heart disease, hypertension, thyroid disorders, diabetes, seizures, or liver problems. Avoid exposure to infections, especially while on long-term corticosteroid therapy. It is not a rescue inhaler—do not use it for sudden breathing problems. Use only as prescribed and avoid abruptly stopping the medication without medical advice.

Contraindications

This medication should not be used by individuals allergic to budesonide, formoterol, or any components of the inhaler. It is not suitable for treating acute asthma attacks or status asthmaticus. Caution is advised in patients with arrhythmias or a history of hypokalemia. Not recommended for use in children without a healthcare provider's supervision.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include headache, sore throat, hoarseness, cough, and oral thrush. Some users may experience tremors, increased heart rate, or nervousness. Serious but rare side effects include chest pain, vision problems, or allergic reactions. Contact your healthcare provider if you notice any persistent or severe symptoms.

Drug interaction

Budesonide formoterol may interact with beta-blockers, diuretics, MAO inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, and antifungal medications like ketoconazole. Combining it with other long-acting beta-agonists (LABAs) can increase the risk of side effects. Inform your doctor of all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are using. Grapefruit juice may also affect drug metabolism and should be avoided.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it's almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. Continue your regular schedule to maintain symptom control. Skipping doses can lead to reduced effectiveness and symptom flare-ups.

Overdose

An overdose may lead to symptoms such as chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, tremors, nausea, or nervousness. In severe cases, it may cause electrolyte imbalance or worsen breathing issues. Immediate medical attention is necessary if an overdose is suspected. Emergency supportive care may be required.

Storage

Store the inhaler at room temperature (20°C to 25°C / 68°F to 77°F), away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Keep the device closed and dry when not in use. Do not expose the inhaler to freezing temperatures or puncture the canister. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
