Generic Buspirone

Common Use
Buspirone is an anti-anxiety medication used to treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Unlike benzodiazepines, it does not cause sedation, dependence, or muscle relaxation. It works by affecting serotonin and dopamine receptors in the brain to help reduce nervousness and tension.

Dosage and Direction
Buspirone is usually taken orally 2 to 3 times daily, with or without food. The typical starting dose is 7.5 mg twice daily, gradually adjusted based on response. It may take 1–2 weeks or longer to feel the full effect—take it consistently and do not stop abruptly.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or heart problems. Avoid consuming large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as it may affect drug levels. Buspirone does not cause significant sedation but may still cause dizziness or drowsiness in some individuals.

Contraindications
Buspirone should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug or in those currently taking MAO inhibitors, or who have used them within the past 14 days. It is not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly needed.

Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include dizziness, headache, nausea, nervousness, and lightheadedness. Less common but more serious effects include blurred vision, chest pain, or movement disorders. Seek immediate help if you experience difficulty breathing or signs of an allergic reaction.

Drug Interaction
Buspirone may interact with MAO inhibitors, SSRIs, antifungals (like ketoconazole), and certain antibiotics (like erythromycin). Always inform your doctor about all medications, herbs, or supplements you are taking.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, and upset stomach. Seek emergency medical attention in case of suspected overdose.

Storage
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep in a tightly closed container and out of reach of children.
