Campral

Common use
Campral is used to help individuals maintain abstinence from alcohol in the treatment of alcohol dependence. Acamprosate, the active ingredient, works by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain that are disrupted by chronic alcohol use, helping to reduce cravings and prevent relapse.

Dosage and direction
The typical dose of Campral is two 333 mg tablets taken three times a day. It should be taken with food or after meals to reduce the risk of stomach irritation. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully to ensure proper dosing and effectiveness.

Precautions
Inform your healthcare provider if you have kidney problems, as Campral is mainly excreted through the kidneys and may require dose adjustments. Campral should not be used as a substitute for a comprehensive alcohol treatment program.

Contraindications
Campral is contraindicated in individuals with severe kidney impairment. If you have a history of hypersensitivity to Acamprosate or any of its components, you should not use this medication.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and headaches. Less common but more serious side effects may include mood changes, such as depression or anxiety. If you experience any severe mood symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

Drug interaction
Campral generally has minimal interactions with other medications. However, it is important to inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, especially those for mental health conditions.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it's almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose—do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal pain. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.

Storage
Store Campral at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep it tightly closed and out of reach of children.
