Generic Carbidopa + Levodopa

Common use
Carbidopa + Levodopa is a combination medication used to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease such as tremors, stiffness, and slow movement. Levodopa is converted into dopamine in the brain, helping to improve movement and coordination. Carbidopa prevents levodopa from breaking down before it reaches the brain, reducing side effects like nausea. This combination is considered one of the most effective therapies for managing Parkinson’s motor symptoms.

Dosage and direction
The medication is typically taken orally in tablet form, with dosages tailored to individual response and disease progression. It may be started at a low dose (e.g., 25 mg carbidopa / 100 mg levodopa three times daily) and adjusted as needed. Tablets should be taken at regular intervals, with or without food; however, high-protein meals may affect absorption. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully, and do not stop the medication suddenly without guidance.

Precautions
Before using this medication, inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, heart disease, asthma, or a history of mental illness. It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you understand how it affects you. Regular monitoring is necessary for blood pressure and movement disorders. Use caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment.

Contraindications
Carbidopa + Levodopa is contraindicated in patients using non-selective MAO inhibitors or those with narrow-angle glaucoma. It should not be used by individuals with known hypersensitivity to either component. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be considered only if the potential benefit justifies the risk. It is not recommended for use in patients with suspicious skin lesions or a history of melanoma.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, and involuntary movements (dyskinesia). Some patients may experience mood changes, hallucinations, or confusion, especially in older adults. Serious but rare effects include low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, or gastrointestinal bleeding. Notify your doctor if you experience severe side effects or mental changes.

Drug interaction
This medication may interact with MAO inhibitors, antipsychotics, antihypertensives, iron supplements, and certain antidepressants. Protein-rich meals and multivitamins with iron may reduce the effectiveness of levodopa. Alcohol and sedatives may increase side effect risks. Always provide your healthcare provider with a full list of medications and supplements.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it's almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to catch up. Keeping a consistent dosing schedule is important for symptom control. If multiple doses are missed, consult your doctor for further instructions.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include severe confusion, irregular heartbeat, hallucinations, or uncontrollable movements. In extreme cases, it may lead to coma or respiratory depression. Seek emergency medical attention immediately. Treatment typically includes supportive care and monitoring in a hospital setting.

Storage
Store the medication at room temperature between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F), away from light and moisture. Keep it tightly sealed in its original container. Do not use after the expiration date. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
