Generic Cefixime

Common use
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It is effective against infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, ear (otitis media), throat (tonsillitis/pharyngitis), and gonorrhea. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, which leads to the destruction of the bacteria. Cefixime is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.

Dosage and direction
The typical adult dose is 200–400 mg per day, taken as a single dose or divided into two doses every 12 hours, depending on the infection. It is usually taken orally as a tablet, capsule, or suspension, with or without food. Shake the suspension well before use and measure with a proper device if liquid form is prescribed. Always complete the full course, even if symptoms improve early.

Precautions
Before using cefixime, inform your doctor if you have a history of penicillin or cephalosporin allergy, kidney disease, or gastrointestinal problems such as colitis. Use with caution in elderly individuals and patients with renal impairment. Long-term or repeated use may lead to secondary infections such as yeast or fungal overgrowth. Always take exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.

Contraindications
Cefixime is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporin antibiotics. It should not be used if there is a severe allergy history to penicillin-related antibiotics. Do not use if the patient is known to have porphyria. Pediatric use must be based on body weight and physician’s guidance.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and gas. Less common reactions may involve rash, headache, or dizziness. Severe but rare side effects include allergic reactions, Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhea, or liver enzyme abnormalities. Seek medical attention if symptoms like swelling, difficulty breathing, or severe diarrhea occur.

Drug interaction
Cefixime may interact with warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. It may reduce the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines (like typhoid vaccine). Probenecid can increase cefixime levels in the body. Always inform your doctor about all current medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to your next dose, skip the missed dose—do not double up. Stick to the prescribed schedule for best results. Missing doses may reduce the antibiotic’s effectiveness and contribute to resistance.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or seizures in severe cases. Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected. Treatment is supportive and based on symptom management. Dialysis may help remove excess cefixime in patients with renal failure.

Storage
Store tablets and capsules at room temperature (20°C to 25°C / 68°F to 77°F), away from light and moisture. Keep liquid suspension in the refrigerator and discard any unused portion after 14 days. Do not freeze the suspension. Keep all medications out of reach of children.
