Generic Chlorpromazine

Common use

Chlorpromazine is an antipsychotic medication primarily used to treat schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. It is also used for severe behavioral problems, nausea and vomiting, and acute intermittent porphyria. The drug works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, helping to reduce hallucinations, delusions, agitation, and thought disturbances. It may also be prescribed to manage severe anxiety or manic episodes.

Dosage and direction

Chlorpromazine is usually taken orally, but may also be given via injection in hospital settings. Dosage is individualized based on age, condition, and response, typically starting low and gradually increasing. It should be taken at the same times each day, with or without food. Do not stop the medication suddenly without consulting your healthcare provider.

Precautions

Before using chlorpromazine, tell your doctor if you have a history of liver disease, heart problems, seizures, glaucoma, or Parkinson’s disease. This medication may make you drowsy or dizzy, so avoid alcohol and use caution when driving. It can increase sensitivity to sunlight, so protect your skin when outdoors. Blood tests or heart monitoring may be required during treatment.

Contraindications

Chlorpromazine should not be used in individuals with known hypersensitivity to phenothiazines. It is contraindicated in patients with severe central nervous system depression, comatose states, or bone marrow suppression. Avoid use in children under 6 months of age unless directed by a specialist. It should not be used with large amounts of CNS depressants.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and dizziness. Some individuals may experience extrapyramidal symptoms such as tremors, restlessness, or muscle stiffness. Rare but serious effects include tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and significant blood pressure changes. Seek medical help if you notice unusual movements, confusion, or fever.

Drug interaction

Chlorpromazine may interact with other CNS depressants, antihistamines, anticholinergics, and medications that affect liver enzymes. Combining it with alcohol, sedatives, or certain antidepressants can increase drowsiness or other side effects. It may interfere with drugs used for Parkinson’s disease or epilepsy. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are using.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s close to the next scheduled dose. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose. Resume your normal dosing schedule as advised. Skipping doses can lead to symptom return or reduced effectiveness.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose include severe drowsiness, agitation, seizures, irregular heartbeat, and loss of consciousness. In large amounts, chlorpromazine can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Supportive care, including airway management and cardiac monitoring, is typically required. Always store and use the medication as prescribed to avoid accidental overdose.

Storage

Store chlorpromazine at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep it tightly closed in its original container. Do not use after the expiration date. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
