Generic Citalopram

Common use
Citalopram is an antidepressant classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It is commonly used to treat major depressive disorder and various anxiety-related conditions. The medication works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain to help maintain emotional balance. It may also help reduce symptoms such as sadness, irritability, and fatigue.

Dosage and direction
Citalopram is usually taken once a day, with or without food. The typical starting dose for adults is 20 mg per day, which may be adjusted by a healthcare provider. It should be taken at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels in the body. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have a history of seizures, liver or kidney problems, or bipolar disorder. Citalopram may cause drowsiness or affect your ability to concentrate, so caution is advised when driving. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication. Elderly patients may have a higher risk of experiencing side effects, especially related to heart rhythm.

Contraindications
Citalopram should not be used in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug. It is contraindicated in patients taking MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping such treatment. People with congenital long QT syndrome or recent heart attack should not use this medication. It is also not recommended in cases of serotonin syndrome history.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include nausea, dry mouth, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. Some patients may experience decreased sexual desire or difficulty achieving orgasm. Serious effects such as suicidal thoughts, irregular heartbeat, or serotonin syndrome are rare but require urgent medical attention. Most side effects tend to lessen as the body adjusts to the medication.

Drug interaction
Citalopram may interact with other drugs that affect serotonin levels, increasing the risk of serotonin syndrome. It can also interact with anticoagulants, NSAIDs, or medications that prolong the QT interval. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking. Avoid combining it with alcohol or recreational drugs.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one you missed. Return to your regular dosing schedule as soon as possible.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, tremors, confusion, and fast heartbeat. In more serious cases, seizures or loss of consciousness may occur. Medical attention should be sought immediately if an overdose is suspected. Supportive care in a medical setting is typically required.

Storage
Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use the medication past the expiration date. Dispose of unused medicine according to local pharmacy guidelines.
