Generic Dexilant

Common use
Dexlansoprazole (Dexilant) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori infection or prolonged NSAID use. It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Dosage and direction
Take Dexlansoprazole once daily, at least 30 minutes before a meal, or as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the capsule whole—do not crush, chew, or open it. If you cannot swallow the capsule, the contents can be mixed with applesauce.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have liver disease, low magnesium levels, or a history of stomach or intestinal problems. Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures, kidney disease, or low vitamin B12 levels.

Contraindications
Do not use Dexlansoprazole if you are allergic to Dexlansoprazole or other proton pump inhibitors. It should not be used by individuals with a history of hypersensitivity reactions to PPIs.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, stomach pain, and nausea. Serious side effects, though rare, can include kidney problems, severe allergic reactions, and low magnesium levels, which may lead to muscle cramps or irregular heartbeat.

Drug interaction
Dexlansoprazole may interact with other medications, including blood thinners (like warfarin), certain antifungals, and medications for HIV. Inform your doctor about all current medications to avoid possible interactions.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s close to your next scheduled dose. Do not take two doses at once to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include confusion, severe dizziness, or irregular heartbeat. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.

Storage
Store Dexlansoprazole at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication in its original container and out of the reach of children.
