Generic Digoxin

Common use
Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside used to treat heart failure and certain types of irregular heartbeats, such as atrial fibrillation. It helps the heart work more efficiently by increasing the force of myocardial contractions and regulating heart rhythm. The medication improves symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue. It is commonly used in long-term management of chronic heart conditions.

Dosage and direction
Digoxin is typically taken once daily by mouth, with or without food. Dosage is carefully calculated based on age, weight, kidney function, and medical condition. Blood tests are often required to monitor drug levels and prevent toxicity. Always follow your doctor's instructions precisely and do not adjust your dose without consultation.

Precautions
Before using digoxin, inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, thyroid problems, electrolyte imbalances, or a recent heart attack. The drug requires close monitoring, as small dosage changes can have significant effects. Maintain a consistent diet, especially in potassium and magnesium intake. Avoid taking antacids or fiber supplements close to your dose, as they may reduce absorption.

Contraindications

Digoxin interacts with many medications, including diuretics, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and certain antibiotics. Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Skip the missed dose if necessary — never double up. Consistency is important, so try to take the medication at the same time daily. Inform your doctor if you miss doses frequently.

Overdose
Digoxin overdose can be life-threatening and symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, slow or irregular heartbeat, vision changes, and confusion. Immediate medical attention is essential. In severe cases, treatment may include administration of digoxin-specific antibody fragments (Digibind). Do not delay emergency care.

Storage
Store digoxin at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep it tightly closed and out of reach of children. Do not store in the bathroom. Dispose of expired or unused medicine as instructed by a pharmacist.
