Generic Donepezil

Common Use
Donepezil is used to treat mild to severe dementia associated with Alzheimer’s disease. It works by increasing levels of acetylcholine in the brain, a neurotransmitter involved in memory and cognition. Though not a cure, it can improve symptoms such as memory, awareness, and the ability to perform daily functions.

Dosage and Direction
Donepezil is taken orally once daily, usually at bedtime. The typical starting dose is 5 mg, which may be increased to 10 mg after 4–6 weeks based on response and tolerance. Tablets should be taken with or without food and swallowed whole; oral disintegrating tablets should dissolve on the tongue.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have a history of ulcers, heart rhythm disorders, asthma, seizures, or liver problems. Use caution when driving or operating machinery, as the drug may cause dizziness or fatigue. Regular monitoring may be needed, especially in elderly patients.

Contraindications
Donepezil is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or other cholinesterase inhibitors. It should not be used in individuals with uncontrolled heart block or severe respiratory conditions without medical supervision.

Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, fatigue, and muscle cramps. Serious effects may include bradycardia (slow heartbeat), gastrointestinal bleeding, seizures, or fainting. Contact a doctor if serious or persistent side effects occur.

Drug Interaction
Donepezil may interact with anticholinergic drugs, NSAIDs, antifungals, and medications that affect heart rate. Caution is advised when taken with other cholinesterase inhibitors or muscle relaxants like succinylcholine.

Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If it’s close to the next dose, skip the missed one—do not double the dose. If several days are missed, consult your doctor before restarting.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, slow heart rate, and respiratory depression. Immediate medical attention is required in case of overdose.

Storage
Store donepezil at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep in its original packaging and out of reach of children. Do not use expired tablets.
