Generic Eflornithine

Common use

Eflornithine is a topical medication used to slow the growth of unwanted facial hair in women. It is commonly prescribed for facial hirsutism (excess hair growth), often caused by hormonal imbalances or conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The cream doesn’t remove hair but works by blocking an enzyme needed for hair growth. Results may take 4–8 weeks of consistent use to become noticeable.

Dosage and direction

Apply a thin layer of eflornithine cream to the affected facial areas twice daily, at least 8 hours apart. The skin should be clean and dry before application, and you should wait at least 4 hours before washing the treated area. Do not apply makeup or other facial products until the cream is fully absorbed. Continue regular hair removal methods during the treatment.

Precautions

Avoid applying the cream to broken, irritated, or sunburned skin. If irritation develops, reduce the frequency of application or stop using it temporarily. The medication is for external use only and should not come into contact with the eyes, mouth, or inside the nose. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare provider before use.

Contraindications

Eflornithine is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its ingredients. It is not intended for use on other parts of the body besides the face and chin. Children under the age of 12 should not use this medication. Do not use if the skin is severely inflamed or infected.

Possible side effect

The most common side effects include redness, burning, tingling, or rash at the application site. Some users may experience acne or folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles). These effects are usually mild and tend to resolve with continued use or by adjusting application frequency. Serious allergic reactions are rare but require immediate medical attention.

Drug interaction

Eflornithine has a low risk of systemic absorption, so interactions with other medications are minimal. However, avoid using it with other topical skin treatments unless directed by your doctor. Using multiple facial products may increase the risk of irritation. Always inform your healthcare provider about any skincare routines or medications.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and resume your regular schedule. Do not apply extra cream to make up for a missed dose. Consistent application is key for the best results.

Overdose

An overdose is unlikely due to the topical nature of the drug. Excessive use may increase the risk of skin irritation but will not improve results. If accidental ingestion occurs, seek medical attention. Follow usage instructions carefully to avoid complications.

Storage

Store eflornithine cream at room temperature (15°C to 30°C / 59°F to 86°F), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
