Generic Escitalopram

Common use
Escitalopram is an antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. It belongs to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which increase serotonin levels in the brain to help improve mood and reduce anxiety. It is also prescribed off-label for conditions like panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Escitalopram helps restore emotional balance and improves daily functioning.

Dosage and direction
Escitalopram is taken orally once a day, with or without food, typically at the same time each day. The usual starting dose is 10 mg daily, which may be adjusted depending on the patient’s response and condition. It may take 1 to 4 weeks to feel the full effect. Do not stop or change the dose without your doctor’s guidance.

Precautions
Before using escitalopram, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, bipolar disorder, or a history of seizures. This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts in young adults during the initial treatment period. Avoid alcohol and be cautious when driving, as the drug can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Regular monitoring may be required for mood changes or unusual behavior.

Contraindications
Escitalopram is contraindicated in individuals taking MAO inhibitors or pimozide due to the risk of serious drug interactions. It should not be used by people with a known allergy to escitalopram or citalopram. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be discussed with a doctor, as the drug may affect the baby. Do not take this medication within 14 days of using an MAOI.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include nausea, dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, and increased sweating. Some users may experience insomnia, decreased libido, or weight changes. Serious but rare side effects include serotonin syndrome, suicidal thoughts, and seizures. Contact a doctor if you experience agitation, hallucinations, or irregular heartbeat.

Drug interaction
Escitalopram may interact with other antidepressants, blood thinners, NSAIDs, triptans, and medications that affect serotonin levels. Combining it with other serotonergic drugs may lead to serotonin syndrome. Inform your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Avoid combining it with alcohol or recreational drugs.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Skip the missed dose if necessary — do not double up. Consistency is key for maintaining stable drug levels in your system. Use reminders to avoid missed doses.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, tremor, confusion, nausea, rapid heartbeat, or seizures. Seek emergency medical help if overdose is suspected. In severe cases, hospitalization and supportive care may be needed. Do not attempt to treat an overdose at home.

Storage
Store escitalopram at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep it in its original container, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use expired medication — dispose of it properly.
