Generic Finasteride

Common use
Finasteride is primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate, and to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It works by reducing levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to prostate growth and hair follicle shrinkage. By lowering DHT levels, finasteride helps improve urinary symptoms and slows hair loss.

Dosage and direction
The usual dosage for BPH is 5 mg once daily, while for hair loss the recommended dose is 1 mg once daily. Finasteride should be taken at the same time each day, with or without food. It may take several months of consistent use before noticeable improvements are seen.

Precautions
Before using finasteride, inform your doctor about any liver conditions or hormonal disorders. Women and children should not handle crushed or broken tablets due to potential absorption of the active ingredient. Regular medical checkups, including prostate exams and PSA testing, may be recommended during long-term use.

Contraindications
Finasteride is contraindicated in women, especially during pregnancy, as it can cause birth defects. It should not be used by children or individuals allergic to finasteride or any component of the formulation. Patients with liver disease should use this medication with caution.

Possible side effect
Some users may experience decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or reduced ejaculate volume. Other less common side effects include breast tenderness or enlargement and rash. Serious side effects are rare but should be reported immediately to a healthcare provider.

Drug interaction
Finasteride has a low potential for drug interactions but may be affected by liver enzyme inducers or inhibitors. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking. Combining with other drugs affecting hormonal levels should be monitored closely.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one — do not take two doses at once. Consistency is key for effectiveness, so try to avoid missing doses.

Overdose
An overdose of finasteride is unlikely to cause life-threatening symptoms but should still be reported to a healthcare provider. There is no specific antidote; treatment is supportive and symptomatic. Seek immediate medical attention if a large amount is ingested accidentally.

Storage
Store finasteride at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F), away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication in its original container, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
