Generic Fluconazole

Common use
Fluconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat and prevent a variety of fungal and yeast infections. It is effective against infections such as vaginal candidiasis, oral thrush, cryptococcal meningitis, and systemic candidiasis. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This leads to the weakening and eventual death of the fungal cells.

Dosage and direction
Fluconazole is taken orally or intravenously, with the dosage depending on the type and severity of the infection. A single dose is often effective for vaginal yeast infections, while longer courses are required for systemic or severe infections. It can be taken with or without food. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for dosing and duration.

Precautions
Before starting fluconazole, inform your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney problems, or a history of heart rhythm disorders. The medication can affect liver function, so periodic monitoring may be needed during prolonged use. It may cause dizziness, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. Fluconazole should be used with caution during pregnancy, especially in high doses.

Contraindications
Fluconazole is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or other azole antifungals. It should not be used with certain drugs that can cause serious heart rhythm disturbances when combined. Patients with advanced liver dysfunction should avoid fluconazole unless absolutely necessary. Use during the first trimester of pregnancy is generally not recommended.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dizziness. Some people may develop skin rashes or elevated liver enzymes. Rare but serious side effects include liver toxicity, QT prolongation, and severe allergic reactions. Contact a healthcare provider immediately if you notice jaundice, dark urine, or irregular heartbeat.

Drug interaction
Fluconazole can interact with many medications including warfarin, phenytoin, cyclosporine, and some oral hypoglycemics. These interactions may increase blood levels of one or both drugs, raising the risk of toxicity. It can also affect how certain heart and seizure medications work. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are using.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next one. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose. Maintaining a consistent dosing schedule improves treatment effectiveness. Consult your healthcare provider if you miss several doses.

Overdose
An overdose of fluconazole may cause hallucinations, paranoia, or liver dysfunction. Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected. Treatment typically involves supportive care and monitoring of vital functions. There is no specific antidote.

Storage
Store fluconazole at room temperature, away from light, heat, and moisture. Keep the medication in its original container and tightly closed. Do not use expired medication. Keep out of reach of children.
