Generic Griseofulvin

Common use
Griseofulvin is an antifungal medication used to treat skin, hair, and nail infections caused by dermatophytes, such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, and jock itch. It works by inhibiting fungal cell division and binding to keratin, making new skin and hair resistant to infection. It is not effective against yeast infections or bacterial infections. Treatment may last several weeks or even months, depending on the infection site.

Dosage and direction
Griseofulvin is usually taken orally once or twice daily with fatty food to enhance absorption. Dosage depends on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's weight and age. It’s important to continue taking the medication even if symptoms improve early. Do not skip doses or stop treatment without consulting your doctor.

Precautions
Before using griseofulvin, inform your doctor if you have liver disease, lupus, or porphyria. The drug may cause photosensitivity, so avoid excessive sun exposure or use protective clothing and sunscreen. Women should use reliable contraception during treatment and for at least one month afterward, as the drug can harm an unborn baby. Regular monitoring of liver function may be required during prolonged treatment.

Contraindications
Griseofulvin is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug or penicillin. It should not be used in pregnant women or those planning pregnancy. Patients with severe liver failure or porphyria should avoid the medication. Breastfeeding while taking griseofulvin is not recommended.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Some patients may experience fatigue, dizziness, or skin rashes. Rare but serious effects include liver toxicity, blood disorders, or severe allergic reactions. Report any unusual symptoms or allergic responses to your doctor immediately.

Drug interaction
Griseofulvin may decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, increasing the risk of pregnancy. It may also interact with warfarin, alcohol, and barbiturates, altering their effects. Avoid alcohol during treatment to reduce the risk of liver damage and flushing reactions. Inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are using.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible with food. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose — do not double up. Regular dosing is important for effective treatment. Set reminders if needed to avoid missed doses.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and confusion. In severe cases, liver damage or neurological symptoms may occur. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected. Supportive care and monitoring are usually required.

Storage
Store griseofulvin at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep the medication in a tightly sealed container out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiration date. Dispose of any unused tablets safely.
