Generic Isotretinoin

Common use
Isotretinoin is a powerful retinoid used to treat severe nodular or cystic acne that has not responded to other treatments. It reduces the amount of oil released by sebaceous glands and helps the skin renew itself more quickly. The medication also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. It is often prescribed when acne causes scarring or significant psychological distress.

Dosage and direction
Isotretinoin is usually taken once or twice daily with food to enhance absorption. The dose is based on body weight and the severity of the condition, typically given over a 15–20 week course. Your doctor may adjust the dosage depending on your response and tolerance. Never share this medication or exceed the prescribed amount.

Precautions
Before starting isotretinoin, inform your doctor if you have liver problems, high cholesterol, diabetes, or a history of depression. The drug can cause severe birth defects, so strict pregnancy prevention is required before, during, and after treatment. Regular blood tests are necessary to monitor liver function and lipid levels. Avoid waxing, dermabrasion, or laser treatments during and for several months after therapy.

Contraindications
Isotretinoin is contraindicated in pregnancy and in patients with hypersensitivity to retinoids or any component of the formulation. It should not be used by breastfeeding women or individuals with uncontrolled hyperlipidemia. Use is also avoided in patients with liver disease or severe psychiatric disorders. Concomitant use with tetracycline antibiotics is not recommended due to the risk of increased intracranial pressure.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include dry skin, chapped lips, dry eyes, and nosebleeds. Some users experience joint pain, fatigue, or increased skin sensitivity. Serious side effects may include mood changes, vision problems, liver enzyme changes, and severe birth defects. Seek immediate help if you experience persistent headaches, blurred vision, or suicidal thoughts.

Drug interaction
Isotretinoin may interact with vitamin A supplements, increasing the risk of toxicity. It should not be combined with tetracyclines due to the risk of pseudotumor cerebri. Avoid alcohol as it may worsen liver side effects. Inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are using.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible with food unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose. Try to take the medication at the same time each day for best results.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include headache, dizziness, vomiting, facial flushing, and abdominal pain. Overdose can increase the risk of vitamin A toxicity. Seek emergency medical help if an overdose is suspected. There is no specific antidote; treatment is supportive.

Storage
Store isotretinoin at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it in the original packaging and out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiration date. Unused capsules should be disposed of properly according to local pharmacy guidelines.
