Generic Levocetirizine

Common use

Levocetirizine is a third-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic reactions. Levocetirizine is known for its fast onset of action and long-lasting relief. Unlike older antihistamines, it causes minimal drowsiness in most people.

Dosage and direction

The typical adult dose is 5 mg once daily, usually taken in the evening. It can be taken with or without food, and should be swallowed with water. For children, the dose and form (tablet or syrup) depend on age and body weight, and should follow a doctor's instructions. Avoid taking more than the recommended dose.

Precautions

Before taking levocetirizine, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, epilepsy, or urinary retention issues. Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you—though drowsiness is rare, it can occur. Alcohol may enhance sedative effects and should be avoided. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before use.

Contraindications

Levocetirizine is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment or allergy to levocetirizine, cetirizine, or any excipients in the formulation. It should not be used in children under 6 months of age unless specifically prescribed. Avoid using the drug if you have galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption, depending on the formulation. Always read the label for any specific warnings.

Possible side effect

Most people tolerate levocetirizine well. Common side effects may include dry mouth, fatigue, drowsiness, and headache. Less common reactions are abdominal pain, nausea, or irritability in children. Seek medical help if you experience allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness.

Drug interaction

Levocetirizine may interact with alcohol, sedatives, or sleep aids, potentially increasing drowsiness. It may also interact with other CNS depressants. Tell your doctor about all medications, supplements, or herbal products you use, especially if you take muscle relaxants, anxiolytics, or antidepressants. No significant interaction with food has been reported.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose—do not double up. Resume your normal dosing schedule. Missing a single dose is unlikely to cause serious issues but may temporarily reduce allergy control.

Overdose

An overdose may result in symptoms such as extreme drowsiness, agitation, restlessness, or in rare cases, confusion. Children may be more sensitive to overdose effects. In case of suspected overdose, seek medical attention immediately. Supportive treatment is usually sufficient.

Storage

Store levocetirizine at room temperature (20°C to 25°C / 68°F to 77°F), away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep tablets or syrup in their original packaging. Do not use after the expiration date. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
