Generic Losartan

Common use
Cozaar is used to treat high blood pressure and to help protect the kidneys in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension. It belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). Cozaar works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. It also helps to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with heart disease.

Dosage and direction
Cozaar is usually taken once daily, with or without food. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. It may take several weeks to see the full effect of the medication. Always take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Precautions
Before using Cozaar, inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, dehydration, or a history of angioedema. Avoid potassium supplements or salt substitutes unless approved by your healthcare provider. This medication is not recommended during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters. Regular monitoring of blood pressure and kidney function is advised during treatment.

Contraindications
Cozaar should not be used during pregnancy due to the risk of harm to the unborn baby. It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to losartan or any component of the formulation. It should not be used in combination with aliskiren in patients with diabetes. Patients with severe liver impairment should avoid use unless clearly necessary.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, nasal congestion, and back pain. Some patients may experience high potassium levels, indicated by muscle weakness or irregular heartbeat. Serious but rare side effects include kidney problems or allergic reactions. Seek immediate medical help if you notice swelling of the face, throat, or difficulty breathing.

Drug interaction
Cozaar may interact with diuretics, lithium, NSAIDs, and potassium-containing products. Combining it with other antihypertensives may increase the blood pressure-lowering effect. Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you use. Avoid alcohol, which can further lower your blood pressure.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. Consistency is key for controlling blood pressure effectively.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include extreme dizziness, fainting, or a very slow heart rate. Seek emergency medical attention immediately if an overdose is suspected. Supportive treatment and monitoring of vital signs will be necessary. There is no specific antidote for losartan overdose.

Storage
Store Cozaar at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the tablets in their original container. Do not store in the bathroom or near sources of humidity. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
