A 9-year-old Labrador Retriever named Max — 34 kg, neutered male — came in because his owner noticed he'd stopped jumping onto the couch. Then he stopped climbing stairs. Then he started hesitating before standing up from a nap, his hind legs trembling slightly before bearing weight. His owner assumed it was "just getting old." It wasn't. Max had bilateral hip osteoarthritis confirmed on radiographs, with moderate joint effusion in both stifles. He was in chronic pain. He had been in chronic pain for months, probably longer. His owner felt guilty. They shouldn't have. Dogs hide pain better than almost any species we treat.

Max started Metaflam Easy Chews — meloxicam 1 mg chewable tablets — at the standard loading dose of 0.2 mg/kg on day one, then 0.1 mg/kg daily. By day four, he climbed the stairs. By day ten, he was back on the couch. By day thirty, his owner cried during a recheck because "I got my dog back."

That story plays out in veterinary clinics every single day. And it starts with understanding exactly what this medication is, what it does, what it cannot do, and how to use it safely.

What Is Metaflam Easy Chews?

Metaflam Easy Chews are chewable tablets containing meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam class, manufactured by Sava Healthcare Limited (marketed under the Sava Vet brand). They are designed exclusively for dogs — never for cats, never for humans — and are prescribed by veterinarians for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with musculoskeletal disorders.

The product is available in two strengths: 1 mg and 2.5 mg meloxicam per tablet. Each tablet is scored, meaning it can be halved for more precise weight-based dosing. They come in blister strips of 10 tablets.

Key distinctions matter here. Metaflam is the brand name from Sava Vet. Meloxicam is the active ingredient. Metacam (manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim) is the original innovator brand of meloxicam for dogs, FDA-approved in the United States. Metaflam Easy Chews is a branded generic product available primarily in India and certain international markets.

Note: Metaflam Easy Chews require a veterinary prescription. They should never be purchased or administered without a veterinarian's examination, diagnosis, and dosing instructions.

Uses and Indications

Metaflam Easy Chews are indicated for the alleviation of pain and inflammation associated with acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders in dogs, including osteoarthritis. Meloxicam is also used for post-surgical pain management following orthopedic and soft tissue surgery.

Osteoarthritis is by far the most common reason veterinarians prescribe this drug. It is a disease of joints that have been stressed — by genetics, by injury, by weight, by conformation.

Screenshot This: Osteoarthritis affects an estimated 1 in 5 dogs over one year of age. Most owners don't recognize the signs until the disease is moderate to severe. Early limping is often missed because dogs compensate by shifting weight to other limbs.

  • Who is a candidate: Dogs six months of age or older weighing at least 4 kg with veterinarian-confirmed musculoskeletal pain or inflammation. Dogs recovering from orthopedic or soft tissue surgery where pain control is indicated.
  • Who is NOT a candidate: Dogs under six weeks old. Dogs under 4 kg (dosing precision becomes unreliable). Dogs with pre-existing kidney, liver, or heart disease. Dogs with gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding disorders. Dogs with known hypersensitivity to meloxicam or any NSAID. Pregnant, lactating, or breeding dogs. Cats — under any circumstances.

How Metaflam Works

Meloxicam is a preferential cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor. When tissue is damaged, the body produces prostaglandins, which drive inflammation (swelling, redness, heat, and pain). They're produced by COX enzymes.

Meloxicam preferentially blocks COX-2 (the inflammation enzyme) over COX-1 (the protective enzyme). It turns down the volume on the pain and inflammation signal without completely disconnecting the stomach and kidney protection circuits.

Screenshot This: Meloxicam's half-life in dogs is approximately 24 hours — meaning it takes roughly a full day for the body to clear half the circulating drug. This is why missing one dose doesn't cause immediate pain return, and why overdosing or doubling up is so dangerous.

Dosage and Administration

Metaflam Easy Chews dosing follows a two-phase protocol:

  1. Day one (loading dose): 0.2 mg of meloxicam per kilogram of body weight, given once.
  2. Day two onward (maintenance dose): 0.1 mg of meloxicam per kilogram of body weight, given once every 24 hours.

Administration: Give with food or immediately after a meal to help buffer the stomach lining.

Admit it: You've been eyeballing your dog's dose. Maybe guessing their weight hasn't changed. A 10% weight gain means a 10% dosing discrepancy. Weigh your dog at every veterinary visit, and adjust the dose accordingly. Precision matters.

Treatment Expectations: What to Watch For

  • Days 1-3: Many dogs show no visible improvement as therapeutic drug levels establish. Do not increase the dose.
  • Days 3-7: Most owners notice their dog is more willing to move or rise from rest. Morning stiffness often improves first.
  • Days 7-14: Activity levels typically improve further.
  • Days 14-30: You should see the full effect of the medication.

What is normal: Slightly softer stools in the first few days. Mild decrease in appetite for 24-48 hours.
What is NOT normal: Vomiting more than once. Black, tarry stools. Bloody stool. Refusal to eat for over 24 hours. Increased thirst/urination. Lethargy. Yellow-tinged gums or eyes. Stop medication immediately and call your vet if these occur.

Safety: Warnings, Precautions, and Side Effects

Screenshot This: Meloxicam in cats is associated with acute renal failure and death when given as repeated oral doses. Store this medication where cats cannot access it.

Serious adverse reactions (uncommon but require immediate attention):

  • Gastrointestinal ulceration and perforation (black/tarry stools, vomiting blood).
  • Acute kidney injury (sudden increase in thirst/urination, then decreased urination, lethargy).
  • Liver damage (jaundice — yellowing of gums/eyes).

Here's what infuriates me: People giving their dogs human ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Tylenol) "just this once." Ibuprofen has a narrow safety margin in dogs. Acetaminophen can be lethal. Never substitute a human NSAID for a veterinary one.

Drug, Food, and Supplement Interactions

  • Other NSAIDs: NEVER combine meloxicam with carprofen, firocoxib, aspirin, or ibuprofen.
  • Corticosteroids: NEVER combine with prednisone or dexamethasone. This is the most common cause of life-threatening GI hemorrhage.
  • Supplements: Omega-3s and Glucosamine are safe. Discuss herbal anti-inflammatories with your vet.

Missed Dose and Overdose

Missed dose: Give it as soon as you remember, unless it is close to the next scheduled dose. Never double the dose.

Overdose Protocol:

  1. Contact your veterinarian or emergency hospital immediately. Doses as low as 5x therapeutic level cause toxicity.
  2. Call a poison control hotline (ASPCA: 888-426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline: 855-764-7661).
  3. Do not induce vomiting unless explicitly instructed.
  4. Have the packaging and dog's weight ready.

Monitoring Treatment

Screenshot This: The cost of baseline bloodwork typically ranges from $80-$200. The cost of treating acute kidney injury from an unmonitored NSAID reaction can exceed $3,000-$8,000. Monitoring is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.

  • Baseline: CBC, chemistry, urinalysis before starting.
  • 2-4 weeks: Recheck kidney/liver values.
  • Every 6-12 months: Routine monitoring for stable patients.

Lifestyle Integration

  • Exercise: Short, frequent, low-impact walks are better than strenuous sessions. Swimming is ideal. Avoid ball-chasing/jumping.
  • Travel: Keep tablets at room temperature (15-30°C / 59-86°F) and away from moisture.
  • Daily timing: Give at the same time each day (morning meals are best for observing daytime side effects).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I give Metaflam to my cat?
No. Repeated oral meloxicam dosing in cats is associated with acute renal failure and death.

Can I break the tablet in half?
Yes. Tablets are scored for accurate weight-based dosing.

How long does it take to work?
Noticeable improvement within 3-7 days. Full effect by 10-14 days.

Can my dog take this long-term?
Yes, under veterinary supervision with regular bloodwork monitoring.

What if my dog vomits after taking it?
A single episode may not be concerning (give next dose with a larger meal). If vomiting recurs, stop the medication and contact your vet.

Is Metaflam the same as Metacam?
They contain the same active ingredient (meloxicam). Metacam is the FDA-approved innovator brand; Metaflam is a branded generic available internationally.

Can I buy this without a prescription?
No. Metaflam requires a veterinary prescription.
