Generic Metoclopramide

Common use
Metoclopramide is a medication primarily used to treat nausea, vomiting, and delayed gastric emptying (gastroparesis), especially in diabetic patients. It works by enhancing muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract, allowing food to move more easily through the stomach. It is also used to relieve symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when other medications are not effective. In some cases, it is given before chemotherapy or surgery to prevent nausea.

Dosage and direction
The typical adult dose for gastroparesis or GERD is 10 mg taken 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime, usually for 2–8 weeks. For chemotherapy-induced nausea, it may be given intravenously in higher doses under medical supervision. The medication should be taken exactly as prescribed and not for longer than 12 weeks due to risk of serious side effects. Always follow your healthcare provider’s directions carefully.

Precautions
Before using metoclopramide, inform your doctor if you have a history of depression, Parkinson’s disease, seizures, or kidney problems. This medication can cause drowsiness and should not be used while driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. Avoid alcohol, as it can increase side effects like dizziness or drowsiness. Long-term use may increase the risk of movement disorders, especially in older adults.

Contraindications
Metoclopramide is contraindicated in individuals with gastrointestinal bleeding, obstruction, or perforation. It should not be used in patients with pheochromocytoma or a history of tardive dyskinesia. It is not recommended in children unless specifically prescribed. Patients with epilepsy or Parkinson’s disease should avoid this medication due to the risk of worsening symptoms.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include fatigue, restlessness, and diarrhea. More serious adverse effects may include involuntary muscle movements (tardive dyskinesia), especially with long-term use. Some individuals may also experience depression or anxiety. Seek immediate medical attention for symptoms like muscle stiffness, high fever, or confusion.

Drug interaction
Metoclopramide can interact with medications that affect dopamine levels, such as antipsychotics or Parkinson’s drugs. It may also enhance the effects of sedatives, alcohol, and certain antidepressants. Inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking. Combining it with drugs that prolong QT interval may increase the risk of serious heart rhythm problems.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is close to the time of your next dose. Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed one. Keeping a consistent schedule helps ensure the drug's effectiveness. Speak with your doctor if you miss doses frequently.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, confusion, uncontrolled muscle movements, or seizures. In severe cases, it can cause serious cardiac or neurological effects. Seek emergency medical help if overdose is suspected. Supportive care and symptom management will be provided in a medical facility.

Storage
Store metoclopramide at room temperature between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F), away from moisture and heat. Keep it in its original packaging and out of reach of children. Do not use expired medication. Avoid storing in the bathroom or near a sink.
