Generic Minoxidil

Common use
Minoxidil is a medication primarily used to promote hair growth in individuals experiencing androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness). It is also available in oral form for the treatment of severe hypertension that is unresponsive to other medications. Minoxidil works by widening blood vessels (vasodilation), which improves blood flow to hair follicles or lowers blood pressure. It is commonly used as a topical solution or foam for scalp application.

Dosage and direction
Topical minoxidil is typically applied to the affected scalp area twice a day (once daily for some formulations or women). It must be used consistently for several months before hair regrowth becomes noticeable. Wash hands thoroughly after application and avoid contact with eyes or broken skin. Oral minoxidil for hypertension must be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor and often requires additional medications to control fluid retention.

Precautions
Before using minoxidil, consult your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or any scalp conditions. Topical minoxidil should not be applied to irritated or sunburned skin. Avoid using other skin products on the scalp unless approved by a healthcare provider. In oral use, regular monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, and fluid balance is required.

Contraindications
Minoxidil is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components. It should not be used by individuals with pheochromocytoma or untreated congestive heart failure without medical supervision. The topical form is not approved for sudden or patchy hair loss not associated with hereditary balding. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Possible side effect
Topical minoxidil may cause scalp irritation, dryness, itching, flaking, or unwanted facial/body hair growth. Oral minoxidil can cause fluid retention, increased heart rate, and in rare cases, pericardial effusion or ECG changes. Both forms may result in dizziness or unwanted weight gain. Report any serious or persistent side effects to a healthcare provider.

Drug interaction
Minoxidil may interact with antihypertensive drugs, diuretics, and medications affecting the cardiovascular system. Combining topical minoxidil with other topical treatments can increase irritation risk. Oral minoxidil requires careful management with diuretics and beta-blockers to prevent fluid overload and tachycardia. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements being used.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose of topical minoxidil, apply it as soon as possible unless it’s close to your next dose. Do not double the application to catch up. For oral minoxidil, take the missed dose as soon as remembered unless near the time of the next dose. Never take two doses at once — contact your doctor if unsure.

Overdose
Overdose of topical minoxidil is rare but can lead to systemic effects like low blood pressure or dizziness if large amounts are absorbed. Oral overdose is more serious and may cause dangerously low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, or fluid retention. Seek immediate medical attention in case of suspected overdose. Emergency care may include fluid support, heart monitoring, and medication reversal.

Storage
Store minoxidil at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use expired medication.
