Generic Misoprostol

Common use
Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog primarily used to prevent and treat stomach ulcers caused by NSAIDs. It is also used in obstetrics and gynecology for medical abortion, labor induction, and miscarriage management. The drug works by protecting the stomach lining and stimulating uterine contractions. Its use must be supervised by a healthcare provider, especially during pregnancy.

Dosage and direction
Misoprostol is taken orally, vaginally, buccally, or sublingually, depending on the medical indication. For gastric ulcer prevention, it is usually taken by mouth four times a day with food. For reproductive use, the dosage, timing, and route of administration are strictly guided by a doctor. Follow the prescribed regimen exactly to avoid complications.

Precautions
Misoprostol should not be used in pregnant women unless medically indicated, as it can cause uterine contractions. Contraindications

Drug interaction
Misoprostol may interact with other uterotonic agents, increasing the risk of excessive uterine activity. It should be used cautiously with antacids, particularly those containing magnesium, which can worsen diarrhea. Inform your doctor about any other medications or herbal supplements you are taking. Close monitoring may be necessary if combined with other hormonal agents.

Missed dose
If a dose is missed during ulcer treatment, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double up. In reproductive procedures, missing a dose can significantly reduce effectiveness and should be reported to your doctor immediately. Never adjust the dosing schedule on your own.

Overdose
An overdose of misoprostol may cause severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, uterine contractions, or heavy bleeding. It is a medical emergency, particularly in pregnant women. Supportive care and symptom monitoring are required. Immediate hospital attention is necessary in suspected overdose cases.

Storage
Store misoprostol tablets at room temperature, protected from heat, light, and moisture. Keep them in the original packaging and out of reach of children and pets. Do not use expired medication. Dispose of unused tablets safely, following local pharmaceutical guidelines.
