Product Description

Nizoral Uses

Nizoral is used for the treatment of fungal infections including yeast, seborrheic dermatitis and tinea versicolor.

Nizoral is available as a lotion and a shampoo to use on the skin or in the hair. It comes in liquid form for application inside the nose to treat certain kinds of fungi infections caused by yeast called "sporadic" and "endemic" rhinosporidiosis. Nizoral can be applied directly into the nose using a dropper or with a special applicator called a nebulizer. A prescription is needed for this application of nizoral .

Nizoral is also available in an oral (by mouth) tablet form; however, this use of the drug is not common in the United States.

How to take Nizoral?

Follow all directions on your prescription label.  Take nizoral exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the package label, unless you are told otherwise. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often or for a longer period of time than your doctor ordered.

Nizoral may be taken with or without food.

Nizoral ingredients

Nizoral ingredients: ketoconazole

Ketoconazole is a synthetic antibacterial agent. This drug is classified as a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It works by interfering with the metabolism of fungal cell membranes. Ketoconazole has shown to be very effective in both topical and oral treatment of acne, due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties and ability to reduce sebum production.

Best age for using Nizoral

Best age for using Nizoral: over 12

Ketoconazole should not be used on someone under 12 years old unless it's prescribed by their doctor. It could cause serious side effects including bone marrow suppression, liver failure, and adrenal gland suppression.

Nizoral Efficacy

Nizoral is effective in treating cases like fungal acne, seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.

It is effective against 2 types of fungus including Pityrosporum ovale (Malassezia furfur) & Candida albicans.

It is a keratolytic agent, which means it helps in treating of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis by removing dead skin cells & provides relief from itching and flakiness.

Nizoral (ketoconazole) has been shown in studies to be highly effective in reducing the level of fungus affecting people with acne.  One study showed that over a 3 month period it was almost twice as effective as the conventional treatment – Clindamycin 1% and Salicylic Acid 0.5%.

Nizoral has also been shown to be effective in treating women with bacterial vaginosis (BV), by shrinking the numbers of Gardnerella vaginalis (the dominant organism in BV) and bacterial vaginosis-associated organisms.

It is also effective against the growth of various strains of Candida albicans, including drug resistant strains.  It has been shown to be more effective than ketoconazole or miconazole when used for oral candidiasis (thrush)

Nizoral (ketoconazole) has also been shown to be very effective in treating seborrheic dermatitis conditions of the scalp causing dandruff and itching. Studies have shown a reduction in scaling, redness and itching with nizoral.

Nizoral Mechanism of Action

Yeast infections are caused by a yeast called Candida albicans. When Candida numbers increase on the skin, an itchy red rash or scales may appear on the skin. Doctors call this condition candidiasis.

It is not clear how nizoral works to kill fungi and treat infection but it appears that it changes the way tissues respond to Candida so that they can fight infection naturally. In addition, nizoral interferes with the growth of Candida by altering the way that cells gather nutrients.
