Generic Phenazopyridine

Common use
Phenazopyridine is a urinary tract analgesic used to relieve pain, burning, urgency, and discomfort caused by irritation of the lower urinary tract. It is commonly used alongside antibiotics during urinary tract infections (UTIs) to ease symptoms while the infection is being treated. It does not treat the infection itself but helps manage the associated discomfort. Phenazopyridine is also sometimes used after urological procedures.

Dosage and direction
The typical adult dose is 100–200 mg taken orally three times daily after meals, with plenty of water. It should not be used for more than two days when taken with antibacterial therapy unless directed by a healthcare provider. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully for proper duration and dosing.

Precautions
Phenazopyridine is meant for short-term use only and should not replace treatment for the underlying infection. It can cause discoloration of urine (reddish-orange), which is harmless but may stain clothing or contact lenses. Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems before using this medication. Avoid using it for longer than prescribed, as prolonged use can increase the risk of side effects.

Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with severe kidney disease or known hypersensitivity to phenazopyridine. It should not be used in individuals with liver disorders unless under medical supervision. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare provider before use. Do not take it without addressing the cause of urinary symptoms.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include headache, dizziness, and stomach upset. A harmless change in urine color (orange or red) is expected. Rare but serious side effects include yellowing of the skin or eyes, shortness of breath, and skin rash, which require immediate medical attention. Long-term use may cause hemolytic anemia, especially in people with G6PD deficiency.

Drug interaction
Phenazopyridine has limited known interactions but should be used cautiously with other nephrotoxic or hepatotoxic drugs. Inform your doctor about all other medications and supplements you are taking. Lab tests may be affected by the presence of phenazopyridine in the system, particularly urine tests. Always consult a healthcare professional before combining medications.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at once to compensate. Keeping a consistent schedule will help maintain symptom relief. If you frequently forget doses, use a medication reminder.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include bluish skin, fatigue, confusion, or shortness of breath. Immediate medical attention is needed in case of overdose. Supportive treatment may be provided, and in severe cases, hospitalization could be required. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Storage
Store phenazopyridine at room temperature between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F), protected from moisture and heat. Keep it in a tightly closed container, away from direct sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep out of reach of children and pets
