Generic Propranolol

Common use
Propranolol is a beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure, angina, heart rhythm disorders, and to prevent migraine headaches. It works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals like adrenaline on the heart and blood vessels, reducing heart rate and blood pressure. Propranolol is also prescribed for anxiety, essential tremor, and certain types of thyrotoxicosis. It helps prevent complications like heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems caused by hypertension.

Dosage and direction
Propranolol is usually taken orally 1 to 4 times daily, depending on the condition being treated. It should be taken at the same time each day, with or without food. Dosage is based on medical condition and response to treatment, and should be adjusted only under medical supervision. Do not stop taking propranolol suddenly, as it may worsen some conditions like angina.

Precautions
Before using propranolol, inform your doctor if you have asthma, diabetes, low blood pressure, or a history of heart failure. It may mask signs of low blood sugar or overactive thyroid. Caution is advised when driving or performing tasks that require alertness, as the drug may cause dizziness or fatigue. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, and liver function may be necessary.

Contraindications
Propranolol is contraindicated in patients with asthma, severe bradycardia, certain types of heart block, or cardiogenic shock. It should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to propranolol or other beta-blockers. Use during pregnancy should be evaluated by a doctor, as it may affect fetal growth. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding without medical supervision.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include fatigue, dizziness, nausea, cold hands or feet, and sleep disturbances. Some people may experience depression, shortness of breath, or bradycardia. Serious but rare side effects include worsening heart failure, severe allergic reactions, or hypotension. Report any unusual or persistent symptoms to your healthcare provider.

Drug interaction
Propranolol may interact with other medications that lower blood pressure, antiarrhythmics, antidepressants (like SSRIs), and antidiabetic drugs. It may also enhance the effects of alcohol and sedatives. Combining it with clonidine or calcium channel blockers requires careful monitoring. Always inform your doctor of all the medications and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s close to your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose — do not double up. Consistent dosing is important for optimal results. Set a reminder if needed to maintain regular use.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include very slow heart rate, severe dizziness, fainting, difficulty breathing, or seizures. Propranolol overdose requires urgent medical care. Treatment usually includes supportive care, monitoring of vital signs, and possibly administration of antidotes like atropine or glucagon. Do not delay seeking help.

Storage
Store propranolol at room temperature away from light and moisture. Keep the medication in a tightly closed container and out of reach of children. Do not store in the bathroom. Dispose of expired or unused medication properly.
