Generic Quetiapine

Common use
Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder (as an add-on therapy). It helps restore the balance of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin in the brain, improving mood, thinking, and behavior. In bipolar disorder, it can manage both manic and depressive episodes. It is also sometimes used off-label for insomnia or anxiety under medical supervision.

Dosage and direction
Quetiapine is available in immediate-release and extended-release forms, with doses ranging widely based on the condition treated. It is usually started at a low dose (e.g., 50–100 mg per day) and gradually increased by your doctor. Extended-release tablets are typically taken once daily in the evening, while immediate-release may be taken 2–3 times daily. Do not crush or chew extended-release tablets, and always follow your doctor’s instructions exactly.

Precautions
Before using quetiapine, inform your doctor if you have a history of heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, liver issues, or low white blood cell count. The drug can cause dizziness or drowsiness, so avoid alcohol and be cautious when driving or operating machinery. It may increase the risk of weight gain and blood sugar changes, so regular monitoring may be necessary. Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis should not use quetiapine due to an increased risk of death.

Contraindications
Quetiapine is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug or its components. It should be used with caution in patients at risk for QT prolongation or who are taking other medications that affect heart rhythm. It is not approved for treating psychosis in elderly patients with dementia. The safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well established, so it should be used only if clearly needed.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, weight gain, and constipation. Some patients may experience blurred vision, increased appetite, or blood pressure changes. Serious side effects include tardive dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movements), neuroleptic malignant syndrome, or severe metabolic changes. Report any signs of suicidal thoughts, rapid heartbeat, or fainting to your doctor immediately.

Drug interaction
Quetiapine may interact with drugs that affect liver enzymes (particularly CYP3A4), such as ketoconazole, phenytoin, and rifampin. It should not be combined with other central nervous system depressants without medical guidance. Alcohol can worsen drowsiness and increase side effect risk. Always tell your doctor about all medications and supplements you’re taking.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Skip the missed dose if it's close to your next scheduled one—do not double up. Maintaining a consistent routine helps improve treatment effectiveness. If multiple doses are missed, contact your healthcare provider for advice.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include extreme drowsiness, rapid heart rate, fainting, or seizures. In severe cases, coma or cardiac arrhythmias may occur. Immediate emergency medical attention is necessary if an overdose is suspected. Treatment typically involves supportive care in a hospital.

Storage
Store quetiapine at room temperature between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F), away from light and moisture. Keep the medication in its original container, tightly closed. Do not use expired medication. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
