Generic Spironolactone

Common Use
Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, heart failure, edema (fluid retention), and primary hyperaldosteronism. It is also used off-label for hormonal acne, hirsutism (excess hair growth), and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women. It works by blocking the hormone aldosterone, helping the body eliminate excess fluid while retaining potassium.

Dosage and Direction
Spironolactone is usually taken once or twice daily with or without food. Dosage depends on the condition being treated and the patient’s kidney function and electrolyte levels. Always follow your doctor's instructions, and do not increase or stop the dose without medical advice.

Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, high potassium levels, Addison’s disease, or liver disease. Monitor blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels regularly while on this medication. Avoid potassium supplements or high-potassium foods unless directed by your healthcare provider.

Contraindications
Spironolactone is contraindicated in patients with hyperkalemia, severe kidney impairment, or Addison’s disease. It should not be used during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. Use in combination with other potassium-sparing agents or potassium supplements may increase the risk of serious side effects.

Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include dizziness, headache, breast tenderness, menstrual changes, and increased urination. Serious side effects include high potassium levels, irregular heartbeat, confusion, or muscle weakness. Men may experience gynecomastia (breast enlargement).

Drug Interaction
Spironolactone may interact with ACE inhibitors, ARBs, NSAIDs, digoxin, lithium, and potassium supplements. These combinations may increase the risk of hyperkalemia or kidney dysfunction. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are using.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one. Do not take two doses at once.

Overdose
Overdose may cause drowsiness, confusion, skin rash, nausea, or dangerously high potassium levels. Seek emergency medical attention if overdose is suspected. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and electrolyte balance.

Storage
Store spironolactone at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the medication tightly closed and out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiration date.
