Generic Tamsulosin

Common use
Tamsulosin is primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. It works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate. The medication improves urinary flow and reduces symptoms like weak stream, urgency, and frequent urination. It is not used for treating high blood pressure.

Dosage and direction
Tamsulosin is usually taken once daily, 30 minutes after the same meal each day. Swallow the capsule whole without crushing or chewing it. The dosage is determined by your doctor and should not be altered without medical advice. Consistent daily use is important for maintaining symptom control.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have a history of low blood pressure, liver or kidney problems, or if you are scheduled for cataract surgery. Tamsulosin may cause dizziness, especially when standing up quickly. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. Avoid sudden position changes to reduce the risk of fainting.

Contraindications
Tamsulosin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or its components. It should not be used by individuals who experience orthostatic hypotension. The medication is not recommended for women or children. Use with caution in patients with severe liver impairment.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include dizziness, headache, nasal congestion, and abnormal ejaculation. Some users may experience fatigue or low blood pressure. Rare but serious effects include allergic reactions and priapism (prolonged, painful erection). Report any unusual or severe symptoms to your doctor promptly.

Drug interaction
Tamsulosin may interact with blood pressure medications, phosphodiesterase inhibitors (like sildenafil), and CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole. These interactions may increase the risk of low blood pressure. Inform your doctor about all medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Avoid alcohol while on tamsulosin to prevent additional dizziness.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at once. Regular dosing helps maintain stable symptom relief.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include severe dizziness, fainting, or low blood pressure. If an overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Treatment may involve supportive care and monitoring of cardiovascular status. There is no specific antidote.

Storage
Store tamsulosin at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep it in its original container and out of reach of children. Do not use the medication after the expiration date. Dispose of unused capsules properly according to local regulations.
