Generic Telmisartan

Common use
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients at high risk. It helps relax blood vessels by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a chemical that narrows blood vessels and raises blood pressure. Telmisartan may also be used to treat heart failure or kidney problems in diabetic patients. Controlling blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney damage.

Dosage and direction
Telmisartan is usually taken once daily, with or without food, at the same time each day. The typical starting dose is 40 mg per day, which may be adjusted based on the patient’s response. Take the tablet whole with a glass of water. It is important not to miss doses and to continue taking the medication even if you feel well.

Precautions
Before taking telmisartan, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, heart problems, or are dehydrated. It is important to monitor blood pressure and kidney function regularly during treatment. Avoid using salt substitutes containing potassium unless approved by a doctor. This medication should not be used during pregnancy due to the risk of fetal harm.

Contraindications
Telmisartan is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to the drug or any of its components. It should not be used by individuals with severe hepatic impairment or those with conditions leading to bilateral renal artery stenosis. Use during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, is strictly contraindicated. Breastfeeding women should also avoid using telmisartan.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, diarrhea, and back pain. Some patients may experience low blood pressure, especially after the first dose or when dehydrated. Rare but serious effects include kidney dysfunction, high potassium levels, or allergic reactions. Seek immediate medical help if you notice swelling, difficulty breathing, or irregular heartbeat.

Drug interaction
Telmisartan may interact with other blood pressure medications, NSAIDs, lithium, and potassium supplements. Using it with diuretics or ACE inhibitors can increase the risk of kidney damage or high potassium. Avoid alcohol, as it may enhance blood pressure-lowering effects. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for the next one. Skip the missed dose if needed — never take a double dose. Try to take the medication at the same time each day to maintain stable blood levels. Missing doses may reduce the drug's effectiveness in controlling blood pressure.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include severe dizziness, fainting, or a significant drop in blood pressure. Seek emergency medical attention immediately. Supportive treatment, such as IV fluids or vasopressors, may be required. Always store the medication safely to prevent accidental overdose.

Storage
Store telmisartan at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep it in its original blister packaging until ready to use. Do not store in the bathroom or expose to excessive humidity. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
