Generic Terbinafine

Common use
Terbinafine is an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails, including athlete’s foot, ringworm, and onychomycosis. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes, which leads to the death of the fungus. Terbinafine is available in oral and topical forms. Oral treatment is typically used for nail and scalp infections, while the cream is effective for skin-related conditions.

Dosage and direction
For skin infections, terbinafine cream is applied once or twice daily to clean, dry skin. Oral tablets are usually taken once daily, with or without food, for 6 to 12 weeks depending on the infection site. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and complete the full course of treatment. Do not apply more than prescribed or stop early, even if symptoms improve.

Precautions
Before starting terbinafine, inform your doctor if you have liver disease, lupus, or kidney problems. Liver function should be monitored during oral therapy, especially with long-term use. Avoid alcohol during treatment to reduce the risk of liver damage. Use sunscreen or protective clothing, as terbinafine may cause photosensitivity.

Contraindications
Terbinafine is contraindicated in patients with chronic or active liver disease. It should not be used by individuals with known hypersensitivity to terbinafine or any of its components. Oral use in children is limited and must be evaluated by a doctor. Caution is advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, rash, and altered taste or smell. Topical forms may cause local irritation, itching, or dryness. Rare but serious side effects include liver toxicity, severe skin reactions, or blood disorders. Report any signs of jaundice, fatigue, or unusual bleeding to your doctor immediately.

Drug interaction
Terbinafine may interact with antidepressants, beta-blockers, rifampin, and cimetidine, affecting blood levels of either drug. It can increase or decrease the effectiveness of certain medications processed by the liver. Inform your doctor of all current medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Avoid using other antifungals concurrently unless prescribed.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. Regular use is essential for effective treatment.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and stomach pain. Seek medical attention immediately if an overdose is suspected. There is no specific antidote; treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Bring the medication packaging to assist healthcare providers.

Storage
Store terbinafine at room temperature, away from moisture, light, and heat. Do not freeze topical forms. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of expired or unused medication responsibly.
