Generic Varenicline

Common use
Varenicline is a smoking cessation aid that helps people quit tobacco by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms. It works as a partial agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain. This means it both stimulates the receptors to relieve cravings and blocks nicotine from activating them. The medication increases the chances of successfully quitting smoking when combined with support or counseling.

Dosage and direction
Varenicline is usually taken orally, twice a day after eating with a full glass of water. The standard dosing schedule involves gradual increase: starting at 0.5 mg once daily, increasing to 1 mg twice daily over the first week. Treatment typically continues for 12 weeks, and an extended course may be recommended for relapse prevention. Doses should be taken at the same time each day.

Precautions
Patients should inform their doctor about any history of mental health issues, kidney disease, or seizures. Varenicline may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or mood changes, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Alcohol use may increase the risk of psychiatric side effects. Regular monitoring is recommended, especially during the initial weeks of therapy.

Contraindications
Varenicline is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or any component of the formulation. It should not be used in combination with nicotine replacement therapies unless prescribed by a physician. Patients with severe psychiatric disorders may need careful assessment before starting therapy. Use during pregnancy should be considered only if clearly needed.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include nausea, insomnia, headache, and abnormal dreams. Some individuals may experience mood swings, irritability, or depression. Serious side effects such as suicidal thoughts, seizures, or cardiovascular events are rare but possible. Medical attention should be sought if any severe reactions or unusual behavioral changes occur.

Drug interaction
Varenicline has few known drug interactions, but caution is advised when used with CNS-active medications. Combining it with alcohol may increase the risk of side effects like aggression or impaired judgment. Inform your doctor about all prescription and non-prescription drugs you are taking. No significant interactions with common over-the-counter products have been reported.

Missed dose
If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, unless it is close to the next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Missing doses may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, headache, and sleep disturbances. Severe overdose can lead to confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness. Emergency medical help should be sought immediately if an overdose is suspected. Supportive care and observation may be necessary in a clinical setting.

Storage
Store at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep the medication in its original container and out of reach of children. Do not use the product after the expiration date printed on the label. Dispose of unused medication according to local regulations.
